Why do cosmetic companies discontinue popular items?

There are some very popular items I have seen get discontinued (like MAC's shadestick in Sharkskin) and I was wondering why would they do it and not come out with a similar product? Why do cosmetic companies discontinue popular items?
Your question is very important for which I think you should go online and check this out: http://mydailycosmetics.com/articles

Yes isn't it maddening?

It's to sell more: if people think there is something ';new'; out, they are more likely to go and buy it (even if it's the same crap in different packaging). I think this is called marketing.
